We have been working hard to get ready for this. Double, triple practice's since Christmas! We're excited to play as, one, it's been far too long! And, two, we have some new material that we think will be fun for everyone. “The Wellerman (Sea Shanty)” is a new song for us. Our version most closely resembles the version done by Nathan Evans. Nathan's version is pretty stripped down so naturally we “Fire on McGinnis-ized” it a bit ( we can't help ourselves!).

We added another Proclaimers song called “Over and Done WIth.” Another fun song. We play the version that most closely resembles the spirited version in the 2013 British rom-com movie called “Sunshine on Leith.” Martha just started playing it at practice on afternoon. Naturally Mark and Ceann thought she was playing “The Passenger” by Iggy Pop. The two have very similar qualities…Hmmm..

Recently the band saw “Bob Marley One Love" movie. Inpired, as always, we decided to mix in “3 Little Birds” at the end of another popular song. Where did we add “Three Little Birds?” Come to the show and find out!

Did we mention Ed Sheeran? Wow, Ed Sheeran. A world famous singer songwriter performer writes this funny little song called “Nancy Mulligan.” It's a new Irish classic! It took us a while to nail this one down. It's one of those songs that sounds easy to play but it's not. It has unexpected chords and stops, random “heys” and a guitar riff that sounds right, even when you play it wrong! We are proud of what we have done with it and hope you enjoy it too!

We plan to start around 8:30 pm. See you at the Red Dog Saloon - FOM
Fire on McGinnistag:fireonmcginnis.com,2005:Post/73551192024-02-21T16:00:51-09:002024-03-11T21:59:25-08:00Show Announced - The Red Dog Saloon - St. Patrick's Day Eve.
Fire on McGinnis is pleased to announce out first live shows since the beginning of the pandemic! Jeni McDaniel from the Alaskan Scottish Club in Anchorage contacted us to perform June 25th and 26th at the annual Scottish Highland Games. We are super excited of course and the band has begun holding regular rehearsals in anticipation. We have been working on probably the most complex song FOM has ever tried to play. It's called "Mrs Elliot" a cover originally performed by Enter the Haggis. It's almost 4 songs inside one song with fun bagpipe solos. We have a new peppy song by Ed Sheeran and a 3rd song by a band called "The Darlingside." Their version is great but we thought we could do one better by adding real guitar distortion and original bagpipe solos!

Mike is so excited he bought a digital bagpipe chanter so he can practice his technique at home but rest assured, his wonderful highland bagpipes will be on stage!

Again we are super excited about re-surfacing and we are honored to play such a prestigious event! -FOM

Our sets will be short but we will have 4, possibly 5 sets at the games.

It's been a long pandemic and FOM did the right thing by laying low. Certainly it was no fun for any of us but we managed to keep the music alive in small ways.

A more common term is "wood-shedding" but we call them "clinics." Basically they are low volume practice sessions where not all band members are present. Why do this? For most normal people, music isn't written to a mental "hard-disk" somewhere and recalled easily...It starts to fade! Capo positions disappear, starting chords and chord progressions disappear. That sweet solo that you played 1000 times? Gone. Lyrics are probably the toughest. Especially songs like "Bedlam Boys" that has 8 complicated verses. Newer material is always a challenge to remember because it hasn't been played enough. Our solution? Clinics. Just get together and play the material with no expectations. Just get the song "back under your fingers" they say. We have a held a few full band practices and several smaller clinics. It's good to get the songs back.

We would like to recognize Clint Davis for all the help he has provided for some of our practices and live shows. He's genuine and kind, with a strong grasp of all the technical aspects of a modern PA system.

I guess we are just doing what everyone else is doing. Some of us, like our piper, have taken things to the extreme of course! We have managed to have a few socially distanced practices in Kelly's garage which has been both a mental and musical life saver! It's amazing how songs just start to slip away when you haven't played them in a long time? We are having fun with a new cover of a song called "Mrs Elliot" by "Enter The Haggis." The song has a lot of moving parts so learning it has not been an easy task. Martha brought in a song by a band called "The Darlingside." Yes, I'm sure they are popular to somebody but wee folk in Juneau, Alaska had never heard of them. They have a song called "The Best of the Best of Times." Their version is a pretty stripped down instrumental with kind of a "drone" quality to it. Martha saw the potential of this song using the unique instruments and capabilities of FOM. In other words, sonic curtains of guitar distortion and bagpipes! We are having a lot of fun with it. Martha has another song that she wrote called "Glass House." It's very new, so new in fact, some of us are still trying to understand what the chords are!

Mark has been busy with the recordings. Things are getting pretty close really. What's the hold up? Well, having the time to work on them has always been an issue. In that respect, Covid 19 was a blessing. All the time at home means he can focus on things better. Mark is a bit of a perfectionist. Using mad scientist lab like techniques in his garage, he's trying to find the sound that he hears in his head. Our first release, "Moon and Stars" is finished and only needs to be mastered. The rest of the songs are literally one recording session away from being finished.

Like everyone else we are lying low. Trying our best to keep the songs we know on a warm simmer. No shows planned of course. We hope this changes soon. Hang in there!

The band is super bummed of course as we have been working hard to get ready for this. We planned on playing, for the first time, 4 new songs that we think are high energy and very fun to listen / dance too! No plans for a reschedule as of now. Pier 49 was an exception. Nice, sunny warm evening with light winds at Juneau’s newest semi outdoor eatery, Pier 49. We had a great time playing to a large and enthusiastic crowd. Our thanks to Pier 49 and Charlie Harrington for organizing the event and to Molly Tankersley for taking all the great photos (including the “money shot” of Mike piping on the tables!). Also, huge kudos go to Keith Giles, Clint Davis and the boys from Alaska One for providing the sound equipment and sound engineering for the show. Alaska One has always played a key role in the development of Fire on McGinnis and has been there from the start.

The band took a little break from summer vacations but is back on a regular practice schedule. We are having fun taking a stab at a few new tunes. We all love The Police and have been thinking about how to combine a “Message in a bottle” with an Irish folk tune. We think we found an answer so, stay tuned for that! We also love a Dropkick Murphy’s song called “Rose Tattoo.” Of course, no can rock “Rose Tattoo” like the Dropkick Murphy’s but we like to challenge ourselves and it’s such a sing-a-long kind of song!

The City of Juneau Pipe Band stopped by and entertained us with several traditional bagpipe tunes and some Celtic dancing. Pubs, stages, big and small, and once under a staircase bannister behind a hot tub so it means a lot when we say that the Sitzmark was the best place we have ever played! The Sitzmark is owned by the Alyeska ski resort in Girdwood, Alaska. Not a big deal to get there, it's about a 40 minute drive from the Anchorage airport (assuming the roads are good!) and the trip along Turnagain arm is quite scenic. The Anchorage area had a significant snowstorm the night before so the Alyeska limo service was a tad on the tardy side but other than that, our treatment by the Alyeska hotel staff was exceptional. They even threw in an extra room for our troubles.
It's a fast shuttle ride to the Sitzmark Bar and Grill and even faster to ski there from the resort itself. The stage is smallish but well organized and the sound crew, Darron and Jonas helped us settle in nicely.
In the daylight the Sitzmark is nice place. It's basically a ski-in, ski-out lodge at the base of Alyeska ski resort. It's open, spacious, good food and ton's of beer on tap. At night the place completely transforms however. The Sitzmark ceiling, hardly noted during the day becomes an incredible work of art at night! Trippy spirals, shapes and stars. You feel like you are either under the sea or floating in space depending on what kind of trip you're on. The psychedelic ceiling, combined with the laser lighted show made for quite an event.
St. Patrick's day fell on a Monday this year so the crowd was a little smeared out from a tough weekend. Oddly the bar rebounded when Mike started playing "Amazing Grace" on pipes. Suddenly we had a sing-a-long followed by a sea of freak dancing to our rocked out brand of traditional music.
We like to thank Skip Lichter for inviting us and sorting out the needed details. Also, we want to thank Ben Napolitano for covering the graphics and postering. And lastly, cheers to the Alyeska staff and limo service that made our short stay in Girdwood so great! -FOMFire on McGinnistag:fireonmcginnis.com,2005:Post/26754932014-03-02T18:57:02-09:002022-05-25T05:27:24-08:00McGivney's - Thank you! Sitzmark soonThank you all for coming to our first ever show at McGivney's. A big thanks to the owners and especially Sam Thirlwall for organizing the show. Also, we wouldn't have pulled this off if it wasn't for Clint Davis on sound. The stage area was tight at McGivney's. Clint had to make do by setting up the soundboard on top of several empty beer kegs! Yes, we admit it, Fire on McGinnis is not the easiest nor the smallest band to quickly set up in a pub but we did it. The only casualty of the night was Mike's bagpipes. During the rushed setup he accidentally stepped on and snapped one of the pipes in two - yikes! Thank the maker for the modern miracle of electrical tape! We don't know what the future is of his pipes but we hope he can find a replacement set for the St. Patrick's day show. Speaking of, we are soon off to what will be our biggest show of the year. The Sitzmark at the Alyeska Ski resort. The Sitzmark asked us to play a few years ago but we made more promises than we could keep and simply couldn't make it. Well, there's no conflicts this year and we are all very excited about this. There will be prizes and give-aways all night including custom Jameson Whiskey Ski jackets. We don't know what to expect but we are certain it will be fun. Thanks for sticking around! -FOMFire on McGinnistag:fireonmcginnis.com,2005:Post/24295732014-01-19T14:13:47-09:002022-05-25T05:05:39-08:00McGivney's Show AnnouncedFOM is pleased to announce our first show of the year and our first show at McGivney's. FOM has been busy learning new songs and even dusting off some "classic FOM" material that we haven't played for years so this will be fun! This show is a run up to the big show at Alyeska on St. Patrick's day. McGivney's is a new Irish themed sports bar in Juneau with a terrific bar menu and the best french fries in town. We've been working with the new manager, Sam Thirwall, to get this show lined up for some time. McGivney's has made a serious investment in sound equipment and has quickly become "the place" to see a live band in Juneau, come join us! -fomFire on McGinnistag:fireonmcginnis.com,2005:Post/21131402013-11-25T17:50:33-09:002023-12-10T07:50:58-09:00A new recording project beginsSo, a new FOM recording project starts. Martha and Mark start by recording "scratch" tracks. From there the tracks are sent around to the rest of the band to see if things work. Getting the tempo just right is the real focus of a scratch track. A "fast song" that is played too slow suffers an energy drain while a "slow song" that is played too fast may lack an emotional connection (if that's what you are after!). Already we have had to re-record a few scratch tracks. The culprit? Too slow! Next thing on the to-do list is for us to practice along to these tracks in anticipaton of recording them live. -fom
Fire on McGinnistag:fireonmcginnis.com,2005:Post/18996592013-10-05T21:00:00-08:002022-05-25T03:24:53-08:00WOOFSTOCK is here!Woofstock is here!
